This morning, I’m joining a small group in the town centre for a guided tour that promises to reveal Pornichet from a different perspective. 1 hour and 30 minutes travelling back through time, from the original dunes to ornate façades, with a guide who seems to know every villa as if it were an old friend.

From the very first minutes, we travel back in time. Laurence takes us back to the days when Pornichet was nothing more than a small fishing hamlet nestled among the dunes, with no streets and no squares. Then she unfolds the story: the arrival of the railway in 1879, the first holidaymakers stepping off the train, the villas gradually appearing along the Atlantic shoreline.
The tour continues through the avenues of the town centre. We stop in front of Villa Ker Bon Accueil, now the town hall. Suddenly, we notice details of seaside architecture we had never paid attention to before. A few steps further, Villa Malgré Tout reveals itself — one of the oldest villas in Pornichet, a silent witness to the earliest days of seaside tourism.
Then comes the most striking moment. Laurence opens her folder and pulls out photographs from the 19th century. The same avenues, the same façades, but one 150 years earlier. We compare, look for differences and begin to understand what has changed — and what has remained.
