People often say that Pornichet lives to the rhythm of the tides. That is true, but the Atlantic seaside town also beats to the rhythm of its many events. From the opening cannon blast of an offshore race in April to the Christmas fireworks in December, Pornichet’s calendar tells the story of a town that loves coming together, celebrating and sharing unforgettable moments. Here, visitors do not come only for the beach. They come for everything that happens around it.
From offshore racing to festive celebrations: spring and summer highlights in Pornichet
By late April, the deep-sea port takes on an entirely different atmosphere. Sleek Mini Class racing yachts line up for the start of the Pornichet Select 6.50, a solo offshore race that serves as a qualifier for the legendary Mini Transat. Along the pontoons, spectators lean closer, chat with skippers and wait for the starting signal. The season of major events has officially begun.
A few days earlier, another atmosphere took over with Pornichet Déam’bulle, the comic book festival held every two years during the spring holidays. Families wander between live performances, author meet-and-greets and exhibitions. It is the kind of event where people turn pages as much as they stroll the streets.
Then comes the Fête du Port in late May. Boat trips, live music and, above all, the now famous Pornichet Seagull Cry Competition, an event that sparks as much laughter as it does surprisingly convincing performances.
In June, Fête Place officially launches the summer season with street performances and concerts, while the Pornichet Glisse Trophy gathers paddleboard and wingfoil enthusiasts in an atmosphere that is equally sporty and festive.
Summer transforms the beach entirely. In the mornings, Matins Toniks welcome early risers with yoga, Qi Gong and fitness sessions facing the Atlantic, Monday through Friday from mid-July to late August. The day begins with bare feet in the sand and eyes fixed on the horizon before the town fully comes alive.
In early July, the nature race Entre plages et Chemin Creux attracts runners onto three scenic routes (9, 21 and 31 kilometres) combining coastal paths and countryside trails. By late July, J80 sailing yachts take over the bay for the French Match Racing Championships, elite head-to-head sailing duels featuring some of the world’s top competitors. At the same time, the Beach Volleyball Masters bring together more than 1,000 players, amateurs and professionals alike, for one of France’s most prestigious beach volleyball tournaments.
Then come the evenings. Early August welcomes Blues sur la Plage, where internationally renowned blues artists perform directly on the beach at sunset, ending with a spectacular fireworks display organised by the Pornichet Casino. Mid-August sees the Beach Tennis Summer Tour arrive with free introductory sessions open to everyone. And in late August (every other year), eyes turn skyward for Pornichet Plein Vol, an aerial show featuring vintage aircraft, military demonstrations and the unforgettable flyover of the Patrouille de France above one of the Atlantic coast’s most beautiful bays. Visitors look up while standing barefoot in the sand.
Every summer evening, from mid-July to mid-August, starting around 9 pm, Les Renc’Arts Festival transforms neighbourhoods across the town with performers arriving from all over the world. Street arts, circus, dance and world music have made this festival one of Pornichet’s defining summer traditions for more than thirty years.
Pornichet events from spring to autumn and beyond
Les Renc’Arts des P’tits Loups proves that Pornichet’s cultural life does not stop at the end of summer. Every Friday during spring, summer and autumn school holidays, children aged five and above enjoy their own dedicated festival. Throughout summer, younger children aged two and above have their own Wednesday morning programme. Organised by the town of Pornichet, every activity is free.
And once the summer heat fades, the calendar continues. In December, Noël à Pornichet lights up the seafront and brings families together around the magic of the festive season. In both August and December, fireworks displays once again light up the bay and create suspended moments above the ocean.
