Salt Marshes Museum

The only museum dedicated to the Guérande peninsula's salt-marsh culture, the Musée des Marais Salants immerses visitors in a heritage shaped by water, wind and human hands. Here, salt becomes the common thread linking ancient traditions and know-how still in use today.

The tour invites visitors to understand the salt marsh landscapes, their production techniques and the lifestyles associated with them. Objects, works of art, films and interactive devices make up an intimate tour, designed to be observed, handled and listened to. The museum can be discovered freely, at your own pace, but can also be experienced during guided tours accompanied by a mediator, or as part of dedicated tours for groups and schools.

Throughout the year, a varied program of events enhances your discovery. Temporary exhibitions, encounters, gourmet events, nocturnes and activities for young and old extend the experience and offer new insights into the "white gold" that has shaped the region. The temporary exhibition "The Powers of Salt" takes visitors on a surprising journey, revealing the many facets and uses of salt.

Designed to welcome all types of visitors, the museum offers a wide range of services: self-guided tours with mediation panels, touch-screen terminals and films, accompanying booklets and game books, as well as multilingual support materials. The exhibition space is heated and air-conditioned, making it comfortable to visit in all seasons.

Located in the immediate vicinity of the salt marshes, the Musée des Marais Salants is a natural choice for a day out exploring the area. This visit completes a stay in Pornichet by shedding essential light on an emblematic landscape and the men and women who perpetuate its history.
