Saint-Michel Gate - Guérande Castle Museum

One of Guérande's most iconic monuments, the Porte Saint-Michel is one of the major entrances to the medieval fortified enclosure. Built in the Middle Ages, it played both a defensive and residential role. A fortified gateway and logis-châtelet, it was notably the former home of the town captain during the reign of the Dukes of Brittany.

Today, the Porte Saint-Michel is the only part of Guérande's ramparts open to visitors. Passing through its gates, visitors are immersed in the city's military and urban history, through rooms steeped in memory and spaces that tell the story of how the fortified town was organized.

The tour is supported by temporary exhibitions that explore the museum's collections and explore different aspects of the history of Guérande and its territory. Each exhibition offers a fresh look at this emblematic site, combining heritage, historical narrative and contemporary perspective.

The visit continues on the ramparts. From the Porte Saint-Michel, you can walk along more than a third of the medieval wall, offering remarkable views of the walled city, the shale roofs and the surrounding countryside. A suspended walk, ideal for understanding the scale and coherence of Guérande's defensive system.

Designed to be accessible to all, the Porte Saint-Michel features a number of accessibility features. From the first floor, a digital tour allows visitors to virtually explore floors not accessible to people with reduced mobility. Stroller parking and a baby carrier lending service are also available.
